The carat measurement of a diamond is often confused with the size of the diamond, when in reality it is the weight of the diamond. As a diamond’s weight increases, the price per carat increases. The larger diamonds also have higher color, clarity and a more defined cut.
It takes 100 points to equal 1 ct. (carat). Diamonds that are called ¾ ct. can be between 73-78 points. All fractions have a range of points that they can be. A diamond’s weight is measured to the third decimal place (one/thousandths). A thousandth of a carat, and rounded off to the nearest hundredth.
Today we weight diamonds using the metric system. These weights are still translated into the carat as the unit of diamond weight. We use sophisticated equipment like the electronics balance. We also have formulas for determining the weight of a stone in a mounting using size measurements. Some of the devices used to give such accurate measurements are the screw micronmeter, the MOH gauge and the Leverage Gauge, to mention a few.
|* 1 metric carat = 0.2 grams||* ¼ ct. = 25 points = .25 ct|
|* 1 metric carat = 200 milligrams||* ⅓ ct. = 33 points = .33 ct|
|* 1 metric carat = 1/142 ounce||* ½ ct. = 50 points = .50 ct.|
|* ¾ ct. = 75 points = .75|
A jeweler may describe the weight of a diamond below one carat by its ‘points’ alone. For instance, the jeweler may refer to a diamond that weighs 0.25 carats as a ‘twenty-five pointer’. Diamond weights greater than one carat are expressed in carats and decimals. A 1.08 carat stone would be described as ‘one point oh eight carats’.
All else being equal, diamond price increases with carat weight, because larger diamonds are more rare and more desirable. But two diamonds of equal carat weight can have very different values (and prices) depending on three other factors of the 4Cs: Clarity, Color, and Cut.
It’s important to remember that a diamond’s value is determined using all of the 4Cs, not just carat weight.
The clarity of a diamond is the measurement and location of inclusions or flaws within the diamond.
The carat measurement of a diamond is often confused with the size of the diamond, when in reality it is the weight.
The color of a diamond ranges from colorless to specific fancy colors. Including Pink, Blue, Red, and Green.
The better the diamond has been cut the better the make, thus the more beautiful the diamond will appear.
"Such a pleasant experience. I left knowing that I picked the most perfect gift! Terri was such a great help! This was so much better than going into some chain jewelry store. Also they just moved, the new address is 2618 Union rd in Cheektowaga."
"I can't say enough about Diamond Cutters. They really just blew me away. Bill (the owner) treated my fiancé and I like family, taking his time with us, and just giving us an experience that was second to none. Price wise he blew the competition out of the water. He is really dedicated to giving his customers the best deal in town and they seem to take this very seriously. They have a beautiful showroom, a large selection, and a friendly staff that includes a designer on site: if you're looking for something customized to your liking. I came away from this experience with a very positive view of Bill and Diamond Cutters, and I'll definitely be back. My advice, don't bother with Reed's or Jared... Just go to Diamond Cutters
